Thermal Expansion

WHAT IS THERMAL EXPANSION?

When water is heated it expands. For example, water heated from 90°F to a thermostat setting of 140°F in a 40 gallon hot water heater will expand by almost one-half gallon. This is because when water is heated, its density decreases and its volume expands (see below). Since water is not compressible, the extra volume created by expansion must go someplace. During no-flow periods in a system, pressure reducing valves, backflow preventers, and other one-way valves are closed, thus eliminating a path for expanded water to flow back to the system supply. Hence, system pressure increases.

TEMPERATURE VS DENSITY

Thermal expansion of water in a closed plumbing system can create a number of annoying and potentially dangerous problems. These include: the buildup of unusually high pressure in a system (even when a pressure reducing valve is installed); pressure surges; and the chronic or continuous dripping of a temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve. In addition, dripping faucets and leaking toilet tank ball cock fill valves are also symptomatic of thermal expansion. More serious problems can also occur due to thermal expansion. When dangerous pressures are built up in a water heater, internal parts may fail such as the internal flues, fittings or water connections. If a flue way collapses it can lead to the potential release of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide into living spaces. Thermal expansion can also lead to a ruptured or distorted hot water heating tank and may void the manufacturer’s warranty.

EXPANSION TANK

By installing an expansion tank you are giving the expanded water a place to go, without damaging any of your existing plumbing.  We recommend that everyone has one expansion tank for each hot water tank in your house.  Any one of our qualified techs can properly install one to your existing hot water tank.  Just call the office anytime – 770-735-3855

Basic Septic Information

Most homeowners give little thought to their septic systems, until they have seepage in the yard or a backup into the house.  Not only can these situations be expensive, but they are inconvenient, messy and harmful to the water supply & health of the community.

Heritage Plumbing can help you maintain your system.  We have a full line of septic services that range from being able to camera the lines to inspect and diagnose issues, pumping the tank, to replacing the entire system.

Some septic system “Do’s” to help you maintain your septic system.  It is very important to know the location of your septic system and assure there is access to the lid for pumping and inspections.  It may be necessary to have a clean out installed.  Have your tanks pumped every 3 – 5 years and keep a record of all inspections, repairs and dates the tank was pumped.

And now for the Don’ts….  DO NOT go down into or try to make repairs to your septic tank, please call a professional!  Do not drive or park on your septic system.   Do not dig, bury, build or plant anything but grass on your drain field – The grass will help prevent erosion and remove excess water.  Please do not use septic tank additives, flush garbage or use harsh chemical cleaners – adding anything to your septic system that doesn’t belong there can be disastrous.

Please call a licensed professional, like Heritage Plumbing, Inc. at the first signs of septic failure.  It takes all of us to keep our community safe & bacteria free.

Most Common Items That Should Never Be Flushed

It doesn’t matter if you have a septic system or you’re on a city sewer, the following  items should never be flushed down the toilet:

  • Wipes of any kind – Cleaning wipes, baby wipes or paper towels… Even if they say “Flush-able” they are not flush-able.  Trust me on this.  We pull more wipes and paper towels from clogged drains than anything else.
  • Sanitary napkins, diapers, tampons, cotton balls or cotton swabs – These items are absorbent…  Super absorbent and they will continue to absorb and grow.  They do not break down easily & get caught in U’s  and cause terrible backups.
  • Fats, Oils & Grease – I know it’s a liquid when you pour it down the drain, but as soon as it hits the cool water it congeals and hardens creating a pipe clogging waxy mess.  Ever hear the phrase “Oil & water don’t mix”?  Drain your cooking fats into a separate container and toss in the garbage.
  •  Rubber Gloves, Band-Aids or Prophylactics – Flushing these items may seem the most sanitary way to dispose of these when they are soiled.  Please don’t, they need to go in your trash can.  These easily get caught in pipes, never break down and cause countless number of problems in your septic system and water treatment facilities.
  • Cigarette Butts & Prescription Medication – These items, when flushed contaminate ground water supply, destroy good bacteria, release toxins and can adversely affect wildlife.
  • Dental Floss – It seems innocent enough, right? Wrong. It’s plastic which means it’s not biodegradable.  Once it has been flushed it wraps its self around other objects, which can create a very large clog in no time at all.
  • Kitty Litter – Kitty litter is made up of clay and sand.  When the clay and sand gets wet, it hardens into a ball which makes it easy for you to clean up after your pet.  When you flush that sand and clay down your toilet, it remains hard.  Would you flush rocks down your toilet?
Just some money/septic/sewer saving tips from your friendly Local Plumber! Have a great day!

Heritage Plumbing Is The Company To Call!

Just want to let my fellow BGBCA members know if they need a plumber, Heritage Plumbing is the company to call!  We had a problem at our rental house today and after our efforts failed, I called Lindsey at Heritage.  By an hour, owner Tommy Phillips himself came out, evaluated the situation, determined the best remedy & got right to work & took care of the problem.  Fast, knowledgeable, courteous, honest & fair, plus same day service…….what else could one ask for in a plumber?  Thank you Tommy & Lindsey!!

Fantastic Service

We had Heritage Plumbing come on two separate occasions – we needed a new garbage disposal, then we needed 2 new toilets.  All of the Service Techs were great and Kelley in the office is excellent.

Dave R., Canton, GA

Superior

We had taken cold showers for of month and wanted to install a tankless hot water heater.  After several estimates, we chose Heritage Plumbing. Their price was a little higher, but their customer service & product knowledge was far superior than their competitors.

A Pleasure To Work With

It was a pleasure having to talk to Kelley and explain our problem.  And MORE of a pleasure having Tommy repair our water leak.  He went and found it immediately and got it repaired in a much shorter time than we expected.  We will fully recommend Heritage Plumbing to anybody looking for a GREAT solution to a plumbing problem and we will always call Heritage Plumbing for our needs.  Thank you very much.
